According to Elon Musk, things are going to be so much better in just 10 years' time. Money won't matter. No one will have to work. Everyone in the world will be able to have anything they want just by thinking about it. Need something to do? Grow tomatoes.
In a new interview with The Economist, the world's richest man says he's choosing to be optimistic that the robots he's building won't kill us all.
He recommends that everyone read the socialist sci-fi author Iain Banks to understand what the future will look like. It's a Star Trek-inspired vision of "amazing abundance" that Elon insists isn't really socialist.
Elon's future vision is also, it seems, inspired by his childhood memories of how the world should be. Those bygone, happy days of South African apartheid. The days when, according to The New York Times, "all-white enclaves" were "littered with anti-Black government propaganda" and the privileged children of emerald mine-owners could be "sheltered from the atrocities of apartheid."
As his 90-minute interview with The Economist makes clear, Elon's worldview is as racist and incoherent as his tweets. He clearly longs to recapture that moment when everything was all white in his world. He tells The Economist he spends a lot of time and energy encouraging white supremacists and Nazis to rise up and conquer Europe because he doesn't want people "whose beliefs are antithetical to western beliefs" ruining things. He says he's not racist because his latest partner, with whom he's had four of his 14 children, is "half-Indian." And he continues to insist his embrace of fascism is actually quite centrist.
Before Full Space Communism (the new Full Self-Driving) arrives, Europe and the U.S. might need a civil war or two, says Elon. Because we can't expect Elon to deliver global abundance and harmony until the woke mind virus and those who can't be cured of it are completely annihilated.
Of course, you don't make the journey from illegal immigrant to world's richest man without bending a few rules, ruining a few lives, and devastating a few irreplaceable ecosystems along the way.
What about the mass-death catastrophe he caused when he "fed USAID into the wood chipper"?
Elon doesn't even want to acknowledge that reality.
But Musk's most heinous crime deserves special attention
In the early days of Trump 2.0, Elon Musk — cruelly and gleefully — condemned millions of people, many on his home continent of Africa, to death by starvation and disease, all in the cause of the garbled, selfish, and indefensible political agenda he came to late in life.
Instead of going to "some great parties," Musk engineered a mass-death catastrophe that could ultimately kill millions.
Why is the world's richest man killing the world's poorest children? For years, Musk presented himself as a caring liberal intent on saving humanity from climate change and killer robots. He was an immigrant dreamer who took advantage of America's lax immigration enforcement to start a company even before legally establishing his life here. He built his businesses on the ideas of others. When Tesla was on the verge of bankruptcy, he accepted a massive government bailout from Obama.
During the pandemic, Elon profited enormously as the whole world suffered. In March 2020, Elon Musk was just an average billionaire with a net worth of $24.6 billion. By January 2022, as Tesla stock surged, his wealth had multiplied more than 1,000% to nearly $300 billion, even as the incomes of 99% of the world’s population had fallen.
Also during the pandemic: Something snapped in Elon's brain and he came out as a white supremacist, suddenly determined to eradicate "the woke mind virus." What changed? In addition to gaining the kind of mind-boggling wealth that an evil supervillain needs to alter the course of humanity, Elon had experienced a mind-altering event that unleashed his desire to punish and dominate most of humanity. By his own admission, it was Elon's own hand that applied the signature to the gender-affirming care documents that set his trans daughter Vivian on the path to the life she wanted to lead. Yet Elon, in an astonishing display of psychological fragility, later claimed it was the "woke mind virus" that had killed his son, ignoring the fact that his own grown-up signature had allowed for Vivian's transition.
Elon displays a similar personality disorder when denying the consequences of his actions regarding USAID. In February 2025, Elon famously bragged on X that he had "spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper." Within weeks, the consequences of his actions became clear. Food that could have sustained millions of lives lay abandoned in warehouses. Children started dying after their access to life-saving drugs was cut off. (The photo at the top of the page shows 5-year-old Suza Kenyaba who tragically died after contracting malaria and the medicine that could have saved her life was not available, reports The Washington Post.)
While Musk kept having fun in the name of "efficiency," children kept dying. As Musk set the wheels in motion for an unstoppable mass-death catastrophe, the world's richest man justified his actions because, in his telling, even though it's totally possible to colonize Mars, USAID was "beyond repair." In 2026, Musk continues to claim that "there is not even a single dead child!" as a result of his (and Marco Rubio's) anti-humanitarian actions.
But as Nick Kristof writes in The New York Times:
A Boston University researcher estimated that the aid cuts have cost more than 750,000 lives worldwide. A study published in The Lancet, the British medical journal, forecast that at present rates, the aid defunding will cost 9.4 million lives by 2030.
Hundreds of thousands are already dead. Millions will die within years. And Elon refuses to acknowledge his role in even a single preventable death.
Musk's indifference to human suffering is inexcusable. His culpability is undeniable
For Musk to claim now, as he does to The Economist, that "zero" children in Africa died as a result of his cuts to USAID is so delusional that it's surprising he's not already in a straitjacket.
In January 2025, Musk's depraved indifference to the lives of others became apparent to Jason Gray, USAID’s chief information officer, days before Musk's "wood chipper" tweet when, reports The New York Times:
Musk demanded that Mr. Gray shut off email and cellphone access for USAID workers around the world, including in conflict zones. Mr. Gray refused, saying that doing so would put their lives at risk, according to people familiar with the exchange. By the next day, he had been removed from his post.
Today, Musk doesn't just deny the expert projections of mass deaths.
He ignores the reality of what happens when 500 tons of emergency food — lifesaving supplies that are already bought and paid for — get destroyed by the State Department.
Musk's depraved indifference means that children who could have been saved by peanut paste died instead.
Presented with actual facts about specific dead children — whether it's on X, or in The New York Times by the likes of Nick Kristof, or in the pages of Jeff Bezos's Washington Post — Musk simply labels the people who have seen the bodies or talked to the surviving family members "liars."
Even as I type this, children keep dying while Elon Musk, a Trumpian troll who is not only richer than sin, but also looking to dominate life on this planet and beyond for decades to come, continues to insist he's here to save humanity.
Abundance is coming, he tells us! Just not yet.
