Most Americans can celebrate democracy today. The Party of Cheaters and the Proud Boys may cause some trouble in Washington DC. And the Psychopath-in-Chief still has his tiny fingers on the big button. But Warnock, Ossoff and Abrams have painted Georgia Biden blue. And Kamala Harris will rule the Senate.
Historic victories for Democrats in the Georgia runoffs mean that Rev. Rafael Warnock will become the first Black Senator to represent the state. And Jon Ossoff will become the first Jewish Senator elected in the Deep South.
It’s a major shift for Georgia and the nation. And a triumph in particular for Stacey Abrams.
Abrams turned her defeat in the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race into a movement to advocate for free and fair elections in America—and to overcome the racially motivated voter suppression tactics that have for so long allowed Republicans to maintain minority rule.
It shouldn’t be this hard, of course. Democrats have won the popular vote in seven of the past eight elections—and routinely win millions more votes than Republicans while finding themselves the minority party in the Senate.
The fight against voter suppression must continue.
The GOP has used relentless voter suppression and gerrymandering to ratfuck democracy for years. Why? Because, especially when combined with the lies and right-wing media brainwashing that has given us the Tea Party, Birtherism, the MAGA Bomber, QAnon and more, they know that voter suppression works.
In 2020, Joe Biden won by more than 7 million votes in an election that has been challenged, litigated and certified more times than Trump has gone bankrupt. And the poorly educateds and the grifters who milk them still won’t accept the result.
But fuck them. And their feelings.
Today we can celebrate democracy for once.
Democrats can’t relax, of course. Because the propaganda war and the fight against voter suppression will continue. And Republicans will fight dirtier than ever between now and 2022.
But the Biden-Harris Administration now has the chance to work with a Democratically controlled Congress to help get through this pandemic, to issue those $2,000 checks, to rebuild the economy, to take action on climate, to nominate some qualified, non-sex offender, non-religious extremist judges, and to restore some sense of normalcy in this otherwise mad, demoralized, battered nation.
Painting Georgia Biden blue gives the whole country a chance to Build Back Better.
