If Elon Musk’s silence after the leaked Roe v. Wade decision was troubling, his reaction to the Buffalo terrorist attack is downright terrifying.
On Tuesday May 17, President Biden went to Buffalo and said: “Now is the time for the people of all races, from every background, to speak up as a majority in America and reject white supremacy.”
On Wednesday May 18, Elon Musk took to Twitter to do the exact opposite, writing: “In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party. But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican.”
On Thursday May 19, instead of waking up and admitting his Twitter had been hacked by Baby Goebbels Stephen Miller, he doubled down on his ridiculousness, claiming that the Republicans were “moving toward the center to win moderate votes.”
While the rest of us are worried about Nazis, climate change and the rollback of women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, voting rights, and more, Musk thinks the biggest dangers facing the world right now are unions and trial lawyers.
In the aftermath of both the leaked Roe decision and the Buffalo attack, Musk, who considers himself a master memer, continues to tweet memes that are oddly timed, stupidly-sexist-but-incel-friendly and weirdly ominous.
Musk claims he’s a “moderate,” but would a true moderate wait until after the Trump insurrection… after the SCOTUS leak… and after the Buffalo white supremacist terror attack to say that his love of centrism makes this the perfect time to declare himself a Republican? Maybe he just wants to be on the winning side and believes there’s no stopping “moderate” Republicans once they get their hands on the “election machinery.”
One thing is clear. Dark forces are afoot. And Elon Musk is aligning with them.
When he describes the GOP as cuddly centrists, he’s doing more than anyone—even more than Nazi-adjacent MTG—to normalize the white supremacist violence and far-right extremism of the emerging Dark MAGA movement.
What is Dark MAGA? It’s an online gang of testicle tanners and Carlson-Musk fanboys who are now fantasizing about Trump returning to power and taking revenge on his enemies.
As Business Insider describes it:
What began as a fringe campaign posting threatening Terminator-style memes on social media is gaining traction among prominent Trump supporters such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Experts warn that the movement, which often features white nationalist and neo-Nazi imagery, could be the latest example of the far-right online laundering extremism into the mainstream using meme warfare.
I’m not sure how much of Musk’s act is narcissism, stupidity, self-interest or pure racism, but as the fascists prepare their all-out assault on US democracy, Musk is joining other billionaires and picking a side.
Even as he admits that Republicans represent “corporate evil” and “religious zealotry,” he says he’ll be siding with the evildoers and the zealots.
And he’ll be bringing memes.
