In 2016, Republicans voted for the self-confessed sex predator, imagining him to be a successful businessman (because he played one on TV) and a good dealmaker (because someone ghostwrote a book for him).
In 2024, many of them say they will be voting for Trump in the full knowledge that he's an adjudicated rapist, a convicted felon (convicted for crimes that cheated voters in the 2016 election), a business fraud currently banned from doing business in NY, a failed President who—after losing decisively in 2020—incited an insurrection in an effort to overthrow the will of the people, and a "fascist to the core" who will blame the Jews if he loses, punish his enemies (real and perceived) if he wins, and terminate the Constitution so he can rule like the leader he admires most, Adolf Hitler.
Asked about how he can still support Trump after his former Chief-of-Staff John Kelly revealed how much Trump admires and idealizes Hitler and the loyalty Trump imagines Hitler received from his generals, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu shrugged it off, telling CNN that Trump's extremism is "baked in."
He'll choose Trump and fascism, Sununu said with a smile, because Americans "just need a cultural change."
Other Republicans, including Liz Cheney, clearly disagree. Cheney's predicting that millions of Republican women will be voting for Harris.
If that's true, Trump's defeat is assured. But it's still not guaranteed.
Speaking today, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke about Kelly's new revelations, saying in part:
John Kelly... confirmed that while Donald Trump was President, he said he wanted generals like Adolf Hitler had. Donald Trump said that because he does not want a military that is loyal to the United States Constitution. He wants a military that will be loyal to him... that will obey his orders even when he tells them to break the law or abandon their oath to the Constitution... Donald Trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable. And in a second term, people like John Kelly would not be there to be the guardrails... those who once tried to stop him... would no longer be there to rein him in... Donald Trump wants unchecked power. The question in 13 days will be: What do the American people want?
In her short speech, Harris also slammed Trump for invoking Adolf Hitler—"the man who's responsible for the deaths of 6 million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Americans"—as a leader to emulate.
Harris stressed the credibility of those—including John Kelly and former Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley—stepping forward to warn America about Trump's fascistic intentions.
"This is a window into who Donald Trump really is," she said. "From the people who know him best."
At this point, none of America's present-day conservative elites can claim ignorance about the role of Germany's conservative elites in facilitating Hitler's rise to power. People like the smug Sununu are totally on board. They know exactly what they're doing.
The steamroller of fascism is rolling towards us. Only the will of the people can stop it.
