These days, despite promising not to lead America into any more stupid, costly wars, Trump is calling himself a “Wartime President” while presiding over what is possibly the most stupid and most costly war in American history.
Before now, Trump was famous for the multiple deferments he took to avoid fighting in Vietnam.
From now on, he will be more famous for ignoring the multiple warnings he received about the coming pandemic—and for losing more Americans to COVID-19 than died at the hands of the Vietcong.
At Monday evening’s press conference, Trump admitted that America’s losses to the coronavirus were “unnecessary” and “could have been stopped.” But for some reason, he tried to put the blame on an unnamed “somebody” other than himself.
Other countries, of course, took the coronavirus warnings seriously and put in place every step necessary to limit the spread of COVID-19. Those efforts have paid off. In New Zealand, a still-cautious Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the virus has been “currently eliminated.”
Vietnam, which confirmed its first human-to-human transmission in January, has contained the virus so well that it has so far recorded zero deaths.
America meanwhile is locked in a war that has no end in sight. The US death toll has surged by more than 30,000 in just two weeks. But Trump is already encouraging states to open up as rapidly as possible, knowing that many will do so without fully abiding by his own administration’s re-opening recommendations.
Fears of a second wave this summer, especially in states like Georgia that are re-opening too fast, are growing.
If there was one promise everyone hoped Candidate Trump would keep it was this: To keep America out of stupid, costly wars.
For most voters, the wars they hoped not to repeat were the ones in Afghanistan (2,400 US dead) and Iraq (4,491 US dead).
The reality is even worse. It’s 58,000 lost Americans in less than two months. It’s Trump’s Vietnam.
