It's nearly seven years since Trump's White House doctor thought he needed a dementia test.
The results were kept secret.
In 2020, Trump was hospitalized with severe Covid.
The seriousness of his condition was withheld from the public.
Since then, his confusion and cognitive problems have only gotten worse.
What's wrong with this picture?
Trump notoriously guards his medical records more closely than he does America's most highly classified secrets.
While Trump's adult children are concealing—or at least failing to acknowledge—their father's visibly feeble mental state, one family member who has spoken out is his niece Mary Trump, a trained psychologist, who recently told CNN her uncle has a "much-lessened ability to be coherent for any length of time."
Trump's public appearances only increase the doubts about his mental fitness. And the continued secrecy about his health is especially concerning given that Trump's advanced age, family history, and slovenly lifestyle have put him at very high risk for Alzheimer's or dementia.
On the campaign trail, The Washington Post reports, Trump frequently appears "tired," "scattered" and "hard to follow." This week, he "complained about his heightened campaign schedule."
Those close to Trump are clearly aware that he lacks the energy of previous campaigns. "He's older, and more inclined to spend his time at Mar-a-Lago," people in Trump's camp communicated to Axios.
Meanwhile, JD Vance delighted his tech billionaire masters this week with a debate performance slickly orchestrated to present the glib chameleon as the rightful (younger, more coherent) heir to the Trump crown.
Given that Trump's mental decline, although mostly ignored by the media, is happening in public view, we should pay special attention to any johnny-come-latelies looking to position themselves to exploit his cognitive weakness.
Especially when one such ne'er-do-well is the world's richest fascist, Elon Musk.
Trump wasn't, of course, Elon's first pick
Musk famously went all-in on fascism long before he went all-in on Trump, dismissing the two most obvious concerns that people might have for supporting the GOP, namely "corporate greed" and "religious zealotry" with a chuckle.
But having gone full fascist, Musk (much like JD Vance in a VP debate) insisted on focusing on the future.
In July 2022, Musk used his Twitter pulpit to declare that Trump was "too old to be chief executive of anything, let alone the United States of America."
Back then, Musk had his eye on a younger authoritarian, declaring with confidence that Trump's time was over and Florida's "go-go boot" Governor Ron DeSantis would be an easy winner in 2024.
Musk even tried to launch the DeSantis campaign on Twitter Spaces, a fiasco almost as destructive as a SpaceX lift-off next to a precious group of endangered sea turtles.
After DeSantis flamed out, Musk shifted gears, knowing that he could use X and his personal wealth to win Trump's favor.
In recent months, Musk has manipulated Trump in cartoonish ways, in front of the world.
In case the quid pro quo wasn't obvious, Trump responded to Musk's support by vowing to "make Elon's life good" if and when he returns to the Oval Office.
Where do you see yourself in four years?
Elon is investing heavily—and tweeting desperately—to help Trump's campaign because he believes the next four years will be crucial to deciding the future shape—and ultimate fate—of the world.
In a time of massive and rapid technological advances, Musk knows that Trump's "big brain"—even at its bleach-injecting best—simply doesn't have the compute needed to do the job. By positioning himself to have Rasputin-level influence in a second Trump administration, he's hoping to convert his immense wealth into unshakeable geopolitical power.
Plan A: The mentally feeble Trump lets Elon do exactly what he wants, no matter the harm he does to people or the planet.
Plan B: If all else fails, JD Vance will always have the 25th Amendment, with a Trump-approved rationale for executing it, snug in his back pocket.
Neither of these plans should appeal to any sane American.
Especially when you remember that Elon, like Trump, is a scam artist who's not nearly as smart as he thinks he is.
So please, do all you can in the month ahead to support Democratic candidates and encourage those you know to Vote Blue up and down the ballot.
