Trump’s second impeachment trial ended in a landslide 57-43 bipartisan vote of GUILTY. Or what’s known in a Senate Impeachment Trial as an “acquittal.”
As MSNBC legal analyst Glenn Kirschner wrote on Twitter:
43 Republicans just announced, in no uncertain terms, that what Donald Trump did on January 6—launching a violent attack on the US Capitol to stop our democratic process—may properly be done again in the future by any other politician, including Donald Trump himself.
Just like Hitler’s “Beer Hall Putsch” of 1923, the “Trump Insurrection” of 2021 can now be viewed, as historian and author Ruth Ben-Ghiat wrote today for CNN, as “a trial run.”
As Ben-Ghiat told readers of this newsletter just last week, Republicans “now stand for all that Trump embodies: lawlessness in private and public life, and an attitude to politics that holds that any means are justified to stay in power.”
The facts of the case were not in doubt.
Even Mitch McConnell is on the record saying the House Managers proved their case. After joining 42 other Republican Senators to vote against all the evidence not to convict Trump for inciting the insurrection, McConnell took to the Senate floor to say: “There is no doubt that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for inducing the events of the day.”
Meanwhile, Trump is gloating and telling his “movement” he’ll have more to say soon about continuing the “incredible journey.”
In other words, the Insurrectionist-in-Chief has heard the message from the GOP loud and clear: “Better luck next time.”
