As the US death toll from COVID-19 passed 8,000 this first Saturday in April, one of the top trending Twitter topics was: #FoxNewsLiedAsPeopleDied.
It’s a hashtag that reflects the growing recognition of the role Fox News misinformation has played in influencing and parroting Trump’s own lies, feeding the “it’s a hoax” mentality and helping ensure the deadly coronavirus infected the entire nation.
A new video from the Daily Show celebrating “Heroes of the Pandumbic” helped fuel the trend on Twitter.
And each day, new videos continue to emerge that illustrate just how unrelenting the pro-Trump media’s misinformation campaign has been.
CNN’s Andrew Kaczynksi posted a February 25 video in which Kayleigh McEnany, the National Press Secretary for the Trump 2020 campaign told Fox Business, “We will not see diseases like the coronavirus come here.”
Twitter user @DroopsDr shared a video highlighting the multiple times reality TV star Dr. Drew repeatedly downplayed the threat of COVID-19, a fact he now, like Shameless Sean Hannity tries to deny.
Meanwhile, The Daily Beast is reporting that Fox News executives are “stockpiling attorneys” to prepare for “a pandemic of public-interest lawsuits over misinformation and conspiracy theories dispensed by certain Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network personalities such as Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Trish Regan.”
Of course, unlike many Fox News viewers, the aging Rupert Murdoch seems to have avoided contracting the coronavirus because, despite what Fox News was telling viewers, he and his sons knew all along how bad this was going to be.
