Defunding Fascism

How to slow the steamroller of fascism by joining the "economic strike" against the corporations that fund it.

Defunding Fascism

Can the power of the people really stop the steamroller of fascism?

Sometimes it seems impossible.

Especially in an age when our billionaires and tax-dodging oligarchs have become so rich that they don't even have to reach very far into their deep pockets to buy a candidate, swing an election, or even purchase a controlling share in our President.

But, according to Scott Galloway, we can still slow their roll by hitting them where it hurts — in the revenue stream.

To take part, you don't even need to be fan of Scott Galloway. You just have to be anti-fascism.

"There will be no perfect messengers," says Karen Hunter. "So, let me just say I'm not a perfect messenger.... There's no perfection. But what there are, are people doing something. There are people doing things. You ain't got to like these people. So, let me just say that. You don't got to like me... but you have to care about something. So if for you, it ain't going to be marching. It may not be showing up to... state houses. If you're not willing to send an email or write a letter or call... you can resist in other ways. So Scott Galloway — and I think this is brilliant — he has a site which I went to: Resist and unsubscribe. Resist and unsubscribe — it's so easy."

"Resist and unsubscribe"

What happens when you visit resistandunsubscribe.com?

The first thing you see is a two-minute video in which Galloway explains his approach to defunding fascism — and how you can join the "economic strike" against the corporations that make it possible.

As Galloway explains:

Today, the Trump administration is escalating ICE enforcement. That's disappointing. Even worse news, it's with the help of corporations that provide the data, infrastructure, and logistics to make it all possible. That's why resist and unsubscribe isn't a protest. It's an economic strike. A temporary coordinated pullback from consumer discretionary spending focused on where economic and political power is most concentrated, specifically tech and AI. That means pausing or cancelling subscriptions from companies including Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, OpenAI, and more. We've built a website that makes it easy to maximize your impact. Go to resistandunsubscribe.com and take action. The most radical action in a capitalist society is non-participation.

The "resist and unsubscribe" approach does create its own inconveniences, as Karen Hunter acknowledges:

I went to Paramount Plus, hit unsubscribe, and I unsubscribed. Now y'all know watch a lot of television and some of my shows I you know Elsbeth and a bunch of other shows are on Paramount Plus. I will not be watching Paramount Plus... I (click) 'unsubscribe today' and then it asks why.... I went down to 'other' and I wrote 'because you support fascism.'... I want them to be clear why I am not subscribing anymore. But this is a little thing and I, you know, I don't think that's changed the world, but I did it. And I'm gonna go on there and unsubscribe from a bunch of other stuff. I've been unsubscribed from Uber.... Netflix is a tough one. So, you know, but it's not really tough. It's not really tough. I did NFL. I did the NFL.

But even Galloway acknowledges on resistandunsubscribe.com that perfection is near-impossible — claiming that he still needs Meta-owned Instagram to get his message out.

But, inconvenience aside, others are joining the movement to defund fascism, including writer, comedian and commentator Baratunde Thurston who is promising to document his journey on Instagram.

Thurston gives out a shoutout to both Galloway and Dr. Avriel Epps, who is documenting (on Instagram and TikTok) her attempt to "complete her full transition away from Google... finally ditch her smartphone... and get a dumb car" in 2026.

None of this is perfect, but it's a start

Temporarily or permanently canceling subscriptions is just one way to reduce the revenues of the major tech and social media companies. So why not do that — wherever and whenever — you can?

Another way is to simply stop giving them your time.

Meta's ad revenues jumped 22% to $196 billion in 2025. Any time you remove your eyeballs from Meta platforms like Facebook or Instagram, or from rivals TikTok or X, you're giving Big Tech less opportunity to monetize your attention.

Galloway and Baratunde are urging people to ditch OpenAI, too. But I'd argue it's better to weaken Elon's xAI (and Tesla) than OpenAI right now.

In 2026, Grok is growing faster than ChatGPT and Elon is bankrolling fascism way more than OpenAI's President Greg Brockman.

Let's not forget the other bad people out there

The easiest way for consumers to resist Oracle is by targeting their media and social media investments, unsubscribing from Paramount Plus (and avoiding CBS News) and ditching TikTok.

Palantir may be tougher. But you can always express your displeasure at — and spend less with — companies like American Airlines, Wendy's, and General Mills that are increasingly using Palantir technologies.

One name missing from Galloway's "resist and unsubscribe" advice is Andreessen Horowitz. But now's a good time to put the squeeze on them, too.

As Bloomberg reported on February 10, the monster VC firm:

Has emerged as a hidden hand steering artificial intelligence policy in Washington, as President Donald Trump embraces the industry’s relentless push into the emerging technology.
Andreessen Horowitz is now regularly the first outside call that top White House officials and senior Republican congressional aides make when considering moves that could affect tech companies’ AI plans, according to current and former White House and congressional aides.

Marc Andreessen not only has an interest in TikTok, Substack, podcast company Turpentine, and Meta (as an investor/board member). He's also funding:

"An astroturfing AI-powered bot service" designed to "orchestrate actions on thousands of social accounts through both bulk content creation and deployment," despite the fact that it "is in clear violation of policies for all major social media platforms."

I've highlighted before why creators should get off Substack and tell their subscribers why.

I'm not saying it's easy

Even Scott Galloway is showing no sign of quitting TikTok or Google-owned YouTube, platforms on which he racks up millions of views. And he's merely advising people to stop subscribing to X Premium when he could be telling them to ditch the app completely and switch to Bluesky. (For his part, Baratunde is still on Substack.)

On a personal level, here's what Galloway claims to have done thus far: He's unsubscribed from Amazon Prime, Amazon One, Apple TV+ and Uber. He's rejected an ad sponsorship from Apple. And he's cancelled his corporate ChatGPT account. (He hasn't tweeted on X since 2023.)

The bottom line in all of this: It doesn't have to be perfect. But try to do as much as you can to either unsubscribe from — or reduce spending on — the platforms that are actively funding fascism.

Anything you can do to redirect even a part your discretionary spending (or your time) away from the forces of fascism will make a difference.

You might even find that what starts out as inconvenience unlocks new ways to connect with people, shop local, and discover new small businesses online. Perhaps it will free up some extra time to read a book, create a protest sign, or have some good old offline fun.
