Let me start with a big thank you to the small-but-mighty band of paid subscribers who continue to support this newsletter. Some of you have now been supporting this endeavor for more than five years (since I launched at the start of 2020) while others have joined along the way. THANK YOU for your support!
Hurricane season is underway and, thanks to the "Trump Weather Crisis," it's already on track to bring more death and destruction to US shores than otherwise necessary.
I detailed how Trump is actively crippling America's weather service in last week's article. In my attempt to dramatize the consequences of Trump's disastrous cuts, I followed up with an AI-generated video.
Not everyone wants to hear it from AI, though. So today I'm sharing an additional short video on the "cuts have consequences" theme from hurricane specialist John Morales of NBC 6 South Florida.
You can watch the video here:
According to Morales, the quality of our weather forecasts is already becoming degraded:
"There's also a chance, because of some of these cuts, that NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft will not be able to fly this year, and with less reconnaissance missions, we may be flying blind, and we may not exactly know how strong a hurricane is before it reaches the coastline."
With experts predicting a 51% chance of a major hurricane making landfall this year (vs. the historic average risk of 43%), no state on the East or Gulf Coast is safe.
As Don Wuebbles, an atmospheric scientist who sits on NOAA’s scientific advisory board, told ProPublica recently: "We’re going to see huge impacts on infrastructure and lives lost in the U.S."
In other words, the only forecast guaranteed this hurricane season is that Trump's cuts will have consequences.
